Cinekid Festival

Cinekid, the international film, television and new media festival for children and young people

Every year more than 50,000 children aged 3-14 have the opportunity to experience over 500 carefully selected productions. The festival includes feature films, children’s documentaries, short films, animations, television series, cross-media productions and interactive installations. Works are presented in a media-literacy framework and children can participate in masterclasses and workshops. The best new international feature films for children compete in the prestigious Cinekid Best Children’s Film Competition.
For 30 years, Stichting Cinekid has been striving to promote the production of high-quality media for children, to ensure that media productions are accessible to them, and to involve the young target audience actively and creatively in media. Cinekid has achieved this by successfully running the tenday yearly national Cinekid Festival (60,000 visitors) and its Cinekid for Professionals industry sidebar, which serves as an operating base for more than 400 (inter)national media professionals.

The Cinekid Festival offers ideal exposure to both feature and short films, has room for films from all genres and countries, and is welcoming to new filmmakers.

Films at Cinekid are never just screened for a young audience, but always presented in a media-literacy framework. Masterclasses and workshops are organised in connection with the films and, together with Q&A’s, allow children to interact with the films and attending talent. School screenings are hosted at the beginning of the festival and accompanied by custom-made educational material.

The best new international children’s films compete in the prestigious Cinekid Best Children’s Film Competition, while Dutch titles are included in the Best Dutch Family Film Competition. The European Short Film Competition introduces Dutch children to ways of storytelling from a broad spectrum of European countries. The Panorama strand presents feature-length films from all over the world that push the boundaries of creativity. Finally, each edition of the festival presents new special theme programmes and unique retrospectives .

Simultaneously with the screenings in Amsterdam, Cinekid on Location brings films and activities from Cinekid Festival to 34 cities throughout the Netherlands. Ongoing projects locally and abroad like workshops, film screenings, an online media creation platform and digital tools, reach an additional 50,000 children.
